Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 1 tsp (5ml) pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp (5g) baking powder
- 1/2 tsp (3g) salt
- 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups (180g) powdered sugar
- 1.5 tbsp (22.5ml) heavy cream
- 1/2 tsp (2.5ml) vanilla extract
- Red gel food coloring
- Blue gel food coloring
- 2 tbsp (30g) patriotic star sprinkles
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang.
- Cream the softened butter (113g) and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and 1 tsp vanilla extract until fully emulsified.
- Gradually stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt until just combined; do not overmix.
- Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 12–14 minutes until edges are barely golden and the center is set.
- Remove from oven and allow the bars to cool completely in the pan.
- Beat together frosting butter, powdered sugar, heavy cream, and 1/2 tsp vanilla until smooth.
- Divide frosting into three bowls: leave one white, tint one red, and one blue using gel food coloring.
- Spread white frosting as a base layer across the cooled bars.
- Pipe or spoon red and blue frosting to create stripes or stars.
- Immediately top with patriotic star sprinkles before the frosting sets.
